Dogs do not just understand words like we do, they
understand the sound of these words and respond to how it is being said to
them. When teaching them a new command, remember to always have their
attention, they do not have a short attention span, however, if they do run off
then they are just exhausted and you should stop at that point. Your energy is
a big impact on the way a dog looks at you, if you are calm then your dog will
most likely listen to you and give you their attention. Puppies are more
energetic so keeping them calm is key. Some dogs may not respond to food so you
can try dog toys or rubbing their belly but do not lengthen the affection too
much because then they will think you are not in control.
If you want to teach your dog how to sit on command then do
these simple easy steps:
- · When it sits down then give it a treat
- · Repeat about eight times
- · As soon as it sits then say ‘sit’ and give it a treat
- · Repeat this about eight times as well
Once it gets the hang of it then it will listen to you every
time. When you see those dogs that are always looking at their owner for
assurance before doing something, those are the ones that take a lot of
training. Practice takes patience, once which is accomplished, you and your dog
will have a long lasting relationship.
