Teaching How To Sit

Dogs do not just understand words like we do, they understand the sound of these words and respond to how it is being said to them. When teaching them a new command, remember to always have their attention, they do not have a short attention span, however, if they do run off then they are just exhausted and you should stop at that point. Your energy is a big impact on the way a dog looks at you, if you are calm then your dog will most likely listen to you and give you their attention. Puppies are more energetic so keeping them calm is key. Some dogs may not respond to food so you can try dog toys or rubbing their belly but do not lengthen the affection too much because then they will think you are not in control.
If you want to teach your dog how to sit on command then do these simple easy steps:
  • ·         When it sits down then give it a treat
  • ·         Repeat about eight times
  • ·         As soon as it sits then say ‘sit’ and give it a treat
  • ·         Repeat this about eight times as well

Once it gets the hang of it then it will listen to you every time. When you see those dogs that are always looking at their owner for assurance before doing something, those are the ones that take a lot of training. Practice takes patience, once which is accomplished, you and your dog will have a long lasting relationship.

Teaching Their Name

A dog does not take long to learn its name as long as treats are involved, make sure you give it a name that will not confuse it and do not use nicknames, if you want to give it a name that is similar to another person living in the same household then be sure it is pronounced differently, never change its name.

Teaching a dog its name is very important, it prevents accidents from happening by calling out their name before getting into any incidents because they will respond no matter what.

Have a lot of patience with your dog, just like a baby, they take a little of your time to get use to their new lifestyle or their new life as a newborn, no matter how long it takes, do not scold them when they finally do get it.

Never use your dog’s name for something negative because that will cause them to be afraid of their name or not respond, try to avoid ‘no’ and ‘stay’ with the dog’s name.

Take your dog somewhere spacious, like a park, and keep it on a leash about 5 feet away, when your dog looks at you, say its name and give it a treat, repeat about 4 times, then say its name while your dog is looking at you, repeat 8 times, call your dog again, and if it looks at you then mission accomplished!

Don’t forget that treats are a dogs second best friend and treat them nicely.
